  • community imageSimply having a presence on various online networking platforms won’t work in the social media sphere. The key is spending time to build relationships to not only engage with site users, but to get them to interact with each other. While a lot has been said about how to do it, there are also ways to kill off an online community effort. Here are some pitfalls that online organizations should avoid when trying to foster engagement. 1. The Gaping Hole Perception fifth column image Site visitors need to know that there is someone at the other end of the online community who’s listening, and who will respond and engage with them. “The absolute biggest inhibitor is the perception that your contribution is just going into a gaping void,” according to Matt Thompson, interim online community manager for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, in an e-mail interview. For example, on a blog post that doesn’t have comments, few people want to be the first to comment. Thomp

  • One reason seekers of news are abandoning print newspapers for the Internet has nothing directly to do with technology. It’s that newspaper articles are too long. On the Internet, news articles get to the point. Newspaper writing, by contrast, is encrusted with conventions that don’t add to your understanding of the news. Newspaper writers are not to blame. These conventions are traditional, even mandatory. Take, for example, the lead story in The New York Times on Sunday, November 8, 2009, headlined “Sweeping Health Care Plan Passes House.” There is nothing special about this article. November 8 is just the day I happened to need an example for this column. And there it was. The 1,456-word report begins: Handing President Obama a hard-fought victory, the House narrowly approved a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s health care system on Saturday night, advancing legislation that Democrats said could stand as their defining social policy achievement. Fewer than half the words in
  • To truly capture someone's personality in a portrait is a difficult task – especially when asked to pose for a camera. We all cherish those rare, candid photos of friends and family that were caught during a moment in our lives. Photos that show us in our own environment – not self-conscious of a studio with bright lights and formal poses. This is what Julie's portraits are all about. She enjoys taking pictures of people when they are at their most relaxed. This usually happens when shooting at a location that puts people at ease. Whether that's in a home, at a park, or at a party – the portrait should capture the person as others see them. Julie has a BFA in Photography from Washington University School of Fine Arts. Her focus on documentary photography emphasizes the use of natural lighting and a spontaneous perspective.

  • While browsing the internet these days, I see a lot of this: There’s an easier, better and prettier way. CSS Signatures are all the rage these days. If you’re not familiar with a CSS Signature, it’s basically nothing more than an ID on your body tag, like this: <body id="www-domain-tld"> The fundamental purpose of the CSS Signature is to allow a user to specify style adjustments to your site in their own user style sheets. Whether or not users are actually capitalizing on this is a discussion for another day, but doing this has other benefits like having an extra id to use when dealing with CSS specificity.

  • I found this gem via the Jay Barnson. It calls itself a review of the Phantom Menace, but it’s more like a complete deconstruction of the characters, plot, and cinematography. The voice used by the author is one of a crazy old man on an angry incoherent rant, but occasionally you’ll see gaps in the persona and see the disappointed filmmaker / Star Wars fan underneath. I agree with Jay that part 2 was the weakest part of of the review. I think it crossed a line and went from “edgy satire” to “goofy and disturbing”. But that’s just me. Warning: Bad language. Link (YouTube) You could probably cook up some justifications for Palpatine’s behavior to explain why he so often acted against what were ostensibly his own goals. You could construct a larger scheme and then just say that what he did in the movie was what he improvised when the Jedi intervened and brought back the queen. But that just means that the plot was too large and complex for a movie. In any case, if the audience has to

  • Got a job that's totally boring but pays the bills? Hold onto it. But don't use it as an excuse NOT to go after your dream of being self-employed doing something you love. A common misconception about successful independent workers is that one day, in dramatic fashion, they quit their dayjob, hung a shingle, and lived happily ever after. The truth is, most freelancers start off moonlighting, volunteering, interning, and doing client work at night and on weekends in addition to a nine-to-five gig. If you fantasize about living the freelancer life, you can do the same—even in a recession, starting now. Let's turn some of your free time into a new career without giving up the steady paycheck. Freelancing in a Recession: Inroads and Safety Nets Armies of employees have gotten laid off in the past year, and when you're one of the survivors still on payroll, the natural instinct is to feel grateful you were spared, hunker down, and not make a peep. The idea of looking for contract work whe

  • Nick Crocker is MD of Native Digital and co-founder of We Are Hunted. It seems as though the first era of digital music may have come to an end. Napster died, P2P lived in some black market twilight zone, streaming services on ad-supported revenue were suffocated by unsustainably high licensing fees, and subscription services sputtered along, never quite capturing the imaginations of music fans. 2009 ended in a flurry of acquisitions (LaLa, iLike), launches (Vevo) and shutdowns (iMeem), which dramatically rearranged the digital music landscape. When the dust finally settles, expect digital music to begin anew. With that in mind, here are my five predictions for music in 2010.

  • Thanks to "Weird Al" Yankovic, air raid sirens and shouted death threats conjure images of the holiday season as much as jingling bells and the click-click-clicking of reindeer paws. But even if he hadn't recorded cult carols "Christmas At Ground Zero" and "The Night Santa Went Crazy," Yankovic's 30 years of skewering pop culture would still qualify him to team up with former Mystery Science Theater 3000 writer-performers Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, and Mike Nelson to poke fun at the malformed stocking stuffers featured in RiffTrax LIVE: Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza! Before the show goes live in more than 480 movie theaters on Wednesday, Dec. 16, The A.V. Club spoke to Yankovic about treasured Christmas traditions, giving the gift of his latest greatest-hits compilation, and playing to what is arguably his biggest audience ever.

  • What do I do? Play the game. You're white. To begin the game, move one of your pieces… What do the images mean? When it is your (White's) turn to move, the chess board will gently pulse to show the influence of the various pieces. in the left image below, you can see waves over the squares around the king and (very lightly) over the squares where the pawns might capture. When the machine (Black) is thinking, a network of curves is overlaid on the board; see image at right. The curves show potential moves–often several turns in the future–considered by the computer. Orange curves are moves by black; green curves are ones by white. The brighter curves are thought by the program to be better for white. What were Thinking Machines 1,2, and 3? No. 1, built in 2002, was an exploratory version that was similar in concept to No. 4 but was completely different graphically and technically. No. 2 was an installation similar to No. 4; it was shown at the London ICA, 2003, as part of the wo
