  • A couple of days ago I noticed one of my apps was producing an usually high amount of revenue via ads. When something like that happens I'm really interested in finding what's causing it. So first thing I did was logging in to AdMob and examining the reports for this application. This is what I found:

  • I’ve mentioned on and off that I don’t watch TV, and several readers have curiously asked me why I do that and how I manage life without TV. So I thought it’s about time I write an article on it. I haven’t been watching TV for a long time, since about 2006. By TV, I mean watching shows direct from TV networks or channel surfing. I still catch my favorite shows off DVD or online, though the frequency is decreasing. The last new shows I caught were Prison Break and Dollhouse (as I’m a fan of Joss Whedon’s work), both of which have ended their runs.

  • I caught this news on Blastr this morning (via techland) and hesitated to report it, partially because I don't want it to be true and partially because I was waiting for comment from Lucasfilm. That second bit never panned out, so I'm going ahead with the unfortunate update on the "Star Wars" live-action TV series. George Lucas spoke out on the series at special 30th anniversary screenings of "Empire Strikes Back" in May. And while he's still gung-ho to get the series done, it seems that cost is going to prevent it from happening anytime soon. Said Lucas, "The live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don't know how to do 'em. Because, they literally are Star Wars, only we're going to have to try to do them … a tenth the cost. And, it's a huge challenge … lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be." So excuse me while I go weep in a corner.

  • Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
  • Here’s the background: I am a big fan of OOCSS, (the library and the concept) but I have been using Compass, SASS lately at work. I was feeling that sometimes OOCSS and SASS seemed at odds. A friend of mine introduced me to Chris Eppstein, (the creator of Compass) and we talked about the @extend method in SASS. So I created a CSS test page, which started out as a crude way to figure out if there was a noticeable performance difference between SASS’s @extend and OOCSS’s method of CSS.

  • From the DMG: It's easy to overlook the effects of terrain when building adventures and encounters. After all, the party's enemies are the monsters, not the dungeon stairs, the low rock wall, or the crumbled statues in the dungeon room. Yet, terrain provides the context for an encounter. Beneath a crimson sun lie wastelands of majestic desolation and cities of cruel splendor, where sandal-clad heroes battle ancient sorcery and terrible monsters. This is Athas, the world of the Dark Sun campaign setting, a dying planet of savagery and desolation. Life hangs by a thread in this barren land, and now it is up to you to write your own story in blood and glory. Dungeon Tiles: Desert of Athas releases this month, containing four double-sided sheets of illustrated, diecut terrain tiles printed on heavy cardstock, plus two sheets of three-dimensional terrain elements, allowing you to create desert oases, sandstone vaults, and other dungeon and wilderness fixtures.

  • One of the most influential factors in our buying decisions is the opinions of our friends and relatives. Likewise, a large majority of online shoppers now trust what other customers say about the products they buy more than the e-tailers themselves. The reason is that we trust people who are “on our side,” even if we do not know them personally. This attitude was described as the “Amazon effect” by Joshua Porter in his book Designing for the Social Web. He observed during his tests that people always started shopping on Amazon first. Their main reason was not that Amazon was better or that they had an Amazon account; they simply knew that on Amazon they could always find trustworthy information provided by people like them. They wanted to know the “truth,” not an idealistic vision of the product decorated by marketing cliches.

  • Windows: With hardware-accelerated Flash 10.1 final now available, it's a good time to try out some full-screen Hulu or other videos. But click anywhere else, and the window-filling frame goes away. Here's how to keep videos playing full screen using Flash 10.1. We've previously pointed to a fullscreen Flash fix, but the post that covered the fix offered up specific file-copy fixes for particular Flash builds. Now that Flash has updated to 10.1 final, and is changing rapidly due to security fixes, a more general sense of how to change Flash's behavior so it doesn't close down on clicking elsewhere is called for. Luckily, Andrew Brampton provides the answer. His fix requires doing some hacking in a particular configuration file: NPSWF32.dll for most Windows systems, but gcswf32.dll for Chrome users. And it requires using a hex editor to pin down a particular string and change two values. How do you pull that off? First off, download the free XVI32 hex editor. Once you have it install

  • One of the lesser-known jewels of HTML 5 is link prefetching. The idea is to extend the time-honored concept of image preloading to HTML content (and without any messy AJAX code). Here’s how it works: You add a line like this to your page: <link rel="next" href="page2.html"> Then the browser automatically downloads page2.html in a background process as soon as the user’s computer is idle. When the user finally clicks a link to page2.html, the browser serves it from the cache, and so it loads significantly faster. Link prefetching is currently only supported by Firefox. But since Firefox is the second most popular web browser in the world, you can noticeably decrease load times for a significant chunk of your users just by adding one line of code to your HTML. Pretty cool, huh?

  • Throughout my career in interactive marketing, I have maintained a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) checklist for my own use. I have updated the best practice guidelines for each item on the list along the way. It's by no means comprehensive, but I still find it extremely helpful as I approach any new project. I thought I'd share it with you and see what you might add to this list to help make it more useful. As with any check list, it needs to be broad enough to fit most websites, but most high-level SEO guidelines generally are that broad. The other thing to keep in mind with SEO is that the formulas are not definite. Google does not publish the exact formula for title tag length or keyword frequency/density, but throughout years of SEO expert analysis and commentary, these general best practices have come to light and tend to drive top 10 results for medium to long-tail keywords for any business with a relatively "search engine friendly" site. I will tell you that the last few
