We’ve all seen arguments in the design community that dismiss the role of beauty in visual interfaces, insisting that good designers base their choices strictly on matters of branding or basic design principles. Lost in these discussions is an understanding of the powerful role aesthetics play in shaping how we come to know, feel, and respond. Consider how designers “skin” an information architect’s wireframes. Or how the term “eye candy” suggests that visual design is inessential. Our language constrains visual design to mere styling and separates aesthetics and usability, as if they are distinct considerations. Yet, if we shift the conversation away from graphical elements and instead focus on aesthetics, or “the science of how things are known via the senses,” we learn that this distinction between how something looks and how it works is somewhat artificial.

After spending frustrating weeks trying to get the original Dungeon of Doom game to run on my new Jaguar machine using Vmac I found The Dungeon Revealed at the Macintosh Garden! Yippee! A carbon copy of the game made in Mac heaven! There are very few differences between Dungeon of Doom and Dungeon Revealed. Basically just a few graphical changes. The Dungeon Revealed runs on my current mac running 10.2.4 with an OS 9 partition so there is no need to use an emulator or anything fancy. The Cell Phones for Soldiers program was started in April 2004 by 13-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her 12-year-old brother Robbie of Norwell, Massachusetts. Robbie and Brittany's goal is to help our soldiers serving overseas call home. They hope to provide as many soldiers as possible with prepaid calling cards. Through generous donations and the recycling of used cell phones, Robbie and Brittany have already distributed thousands of calling cards to soldiers around the globe.

While I might use some different language today, this technique I posted in 2004 (inspired by Alexander) is still a major help when I’m designing a UI with many elements to juggle. The reason I come back to it is that it helps me design with language first instead of empty templates. Too often a design starts top-down with empty content areas (maybe a main column and a sidebar) and then we fill those boxes in until its “done.” Filling in the boxes would work fine, except having a bunch of stuff on the page doesn’t mean we served the design goals.

Google's dominance in Web search is growing and may grow even more thanks to a change in underlying technology it uses to present search results. So much for Steve Ballmer's ambitions for Microsoft. Google had a 63.7 percent share of the 14.3 billion U.S. searches in March, up 0.4 percentage points from February, and above the 63.5 percent level that was its previous high. Meanwhile, Yahoo saw its U.S. search share inch downward in March to 20.5 percent, from 20.6 percent in February. I suppose we need to mention that Microsoft's share of the U.S. search market increased by one-tenth of a percentage point, to 8.3 percent in March. Whoop-dee-doo. My colleague Joe Wilcox thinks the glass is half full for Microsoft because it had a greater increase in the number of search queries than Google, or anyone else for that matter.

Since things have gotten out of control in terms of questions regarding the setup, the hardware, and what on earth I am using all this for, and what kind of electricity bills it results in, I have decided to setup a short FAQ and a comments section where you can read what others had to say, or leave a comment of your own.

For decades, advertisers relied on newspapers to post job openings, sell homes, and unload cars because the medium reached a broad audience. But as more people migrated to the Internet, websites like Monster.com, Craigslist, and Cars.com popped up to specifically target those customers. Newspapers were slow to recognize the power of the Internet to erode, then splinter their familiar and almost effortlessly profitable business model. And though they've now built a significant Web presence, newspapers' online ad sales haven't grown nearly fast enough to offset the precipitous drop in print advertising. Nor do online ads command as much money as ads in the paper.

In some universe, the name “Syfy” is less geeky than the name “Sci Fi.” Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi Channel, is betting it’s this one. To that end, the 16-year-old network—owned by NBC Universal—plans to announce that Syfy is its new name March 16 at its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. Most professional musicians play from a book called a “Fake Book”. I bought my first fake book containing only about 200 songs when I was a teenager — they were illegal then, but most musicians owned them — for $50. That would be equal to $500. or more now. But fortunately, they have since become legal, so you can buy a real good one with 1000 songs now for $50. or less. A fake book contains just the melody (tune) and the chord symbols of a song, so you have to know chords to use one. But when you do, your playing comes alive — you’re only reading a few notes, but playing lots of notes. Most people learn to play the piano by playing just the written music. Playing by written music is exactly what the phrase says it is — playing the exact notation on a piece of sheet music. But playing by chord symbol is very different. Instead of following the harmony note by note, you follow the chord symbols (i.e. C7 or F) written above the harmonies, filling in the gaps with…well, whatever you

Dunbar's number is a theoretical cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. These are relationships in which an individual knows who each person is, and how each person relates to every other person.[1] Proponents assert that numbers larger than this generally require more restricted rules, laws, and enforced norms to maintain a stable, cohesive group. No precise value has been proposed for Dunbar's number, but a commonly cited approximation is 150. Dunbar's number was first proposed by British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, who theorized that "this limit is a direct function of relative neocortex size, and that this in turn limits group size … the limit imposed by neocortical processing capacity is simply on the number of individuals with whom a stable inter-personal relationship can be maintained." Tyree Glenn, who had the unusual double of trombone and vibes, was an important asset at various times to both Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Glenn became a longtime member of the Cab Calloway Orchestra (1939-1946). Glenn visited Europe with Don Redman's big band (1946). During his association with Ellington (1947-1951), he was an effective wah-wah trombonist in the Tricky Sam Nanton tradition and Ellington's only vibraphonist, being well-featured on the "Liberian Suite." During the 1950s, Glenn worked in the studios, led his quartet at the Embers, and freelanced in swing and Dixieland settings. Other than some European dates in 1947, Glenn's only extensive opportunity to record was for Roulette (1957-1958 and 1961-1962). During 1965-1968, he toured the world with Louis Armstrong's All-Stars. After leaving Armstrong, Tyree Glenn led his own group during his last few years.
