  • The Yahoo! small business services unit, which includes the hosted ecommerce platform used by thousands of online merchants, may soon be sold, clearing the way for Yahoo! to focus on its core businesses, according to published reports. News that Yahoo! had garnered some interest for the unit from corporate buyers was first reported in a Reuters article on the 22nd of September, and was soon the buzz at the National Retail Federation's Shop.org Summit in Las Vegas. "I am surprised that they would be getting out of the ecommerce space when so many other companies are trying to get in," said a Shop.org Summit attendee who believed that ecommerce was one of the brightest spots in the current recession, adding that several new companies had released shopping carts or ecommerce platforms in the past year. According to the Reuters article, Yahoo! was asking between $350 and $500 million for the unit, but might consider a lower sale price if the divestiture was considered to be a strategic

  • October 22nd is the big day for the official release of the latest iteration of the Windows operating system. Many have dubbed it the savior that will bring the glory days back to Redmond. Many have said that it will pretty much wipe clean the foul stench left behind by Windows Vista. I, and a few others, think that Windows 7 will not be the success most pundits are proclaiming. How can I say that? I will give you 10 reasons why Windows 7 could easily fail.
  • We don't know exactly how to say this without overloading your nerd subsystem, but this R2D2 unit packs eight consoles, an integrated sound system and a projector for throwing your Jet Grind Radio sessions onto a wall. The only extras you'll need are the masses of controllers you see above and the steady constitution to not erupt into geek euphoria. Popular Science reader Brian De Vitis is the man you have to thank for this splicing of console goodness, and he's been kind enough to also provide a picture of the R2's mobo-laden innards. It awaits just past the break.

  • As you browse the web, it's easy to forget how many people visit the same pages and look for the same information. Whether you're researching advice on heart disease prevention or looking for museums to visit in New York City, many others have done the same and could have added their knowledge along the way. What if everyone, from a local expert to a renowned doctor, had an easy way of sharing their insights with you about any page on the web? What if you could add your own insights for others who are passing through? Now you can. Today, we're launching Google Sidewiki, which allows you to contribute helpful information next to any webpage. Google Sidewiki appears as a browser sidebar, where you can read and write entries along the side of the page.
  • Since man first touched the moon and brought pieces of it back to Earth, scientists have thought that the lunar surface was bone dry. But new observations from three different spacecraft have put this notion to rest with what has been called "unambiguous evidence" of water across the surface of the moon. The new findings, detailed in the Sept. 25 issue of the journal Science, come in the wake of further evidence of lunar polar water ice by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and just weeks before the planned lunar impact of NASA's LCROSS satellite, which will hit one of the permanently shadowed craters at the moon's south pole in hope of churning up evidence of water ice deposits in the debris field. The moon remains drier than any desert on Earth, but the water is said to exist on the moon in very small quantities. One ton of the top layer of the lunar surface would hold about 32 ounces of water, researchers said.
  • What can I tell you of the day Antarctica died, at least the one you’re familiar with? It is a tragic tale that has irrevocably changed my life, and not for the better. We had been at the great fishing grounds for less than a day, when Lester told me about his plan to swim to Japan. Now I thought like everybody else as far as Lester was concerned, he was having one of his delusional moments which wouldn’t be unusual. Then he dove into the water and started swimming north, he disappeared from our sight and wasn’t heard from again. This didn’t really upset anyone, including his wife who thought he was the worlds largest pain in the ass, an opinion shared by the vast majority of the colony. Now as I’ve said before he wasn’t seen or heard from again, not for nearly 3 years. Then one day Phil was out on the far ice and he saw a large black mass moving quickly toward the colony, and he hurried back as fast as a one legged penguin can hop and slide.

  • I don’t know how many of you know this trick. Did you know that you can hide a ZIP file inside a JPG image? It has been 10 or more years that i know this trick but never (hmm maybe not) have shared this with others. Actually it is not a trick. It is a logical “file format” hack that allows you to add a zip file inside a JPEG image and use both of the formats by just renaming the file. It works 100% on Windows systems, hence these systems tend to identify the file format from the extension. What we will create is a big image with 4 thumbnailed images that when renamed to main.zip it will iclude the thumbnail’s original images. For those that just want to see the final file, here it is:

  • The deal page isn't live yet, but this one's Twitter official: Windows 7 will be just $30 for US college students. Full details are expected any minute, but for now, there's just a placeholder. UPDATED: It's up. The conditions of the deal, which just went live, are as simple as can be: If you're an active student at an American university, or you at least have a working email address from a university (thanks, my old college!), you're entitled to a $30 price for Windows 7 Home Premium (update: or Pro!), which is normally at least $120. Best of all, the offer's good until January 3rd, so you've got plenty of time to bag a license, brah. [Microsoft]

  • I’m so excited! About a month ago Network Solutions (my favorite ecommerce host) contacted me and requested an interview about my ecommerce stores. Today, the interview went live and is spotlighted on their SMART Ecommerce Blog! The interview will also be featured in their next newsletter, so I couldn’t be happier. To learn a little more about my ecommerce experience and background in Internet businesses, please go check out my interview. And be sure to leave me any questions you might have.
  • As many of you know, I’ve been a loyal customer of Network Solutions since 2006. After several disappointing attempts to set up ecommerce hosting with other big name companies, I was fortunate to find Network Solutions and I’ve never looked back. Besides their fantastic 24/7 phone support, I truly believe Network Solutions is the leader in ecommerce hosting. With the ability to completely customize your storefront, import/export products and orders, offer gift certificates and discounts, display related products in product descriptions and much more, NS beats Yahoo Stores, Homestead, eBay ProStores, OS Commerce and every other shopping cart software I’ve come across in both quality and price! Today, I received an email from Network Solutions regarding MAJOR changes they are making to their brand. It looks like they’ve decided to reinvent their website and tweak their products. Of course, I would have remained a happy customer anyways, but their new look does spark a little
  • Remember NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)? It’s an 8-bit video game console released back in 1985. Besides being a solid gaming system, NES brought us legendary games such as Super Mario Bros, Tetris, and The Legend of Zelda. What does all that have to do with Google’s (Google) web browser, Chrome (Chrome)? Well, a chap named Ben Firshman ported a NES emulator called vNES into JavaScript, creating JSNES. Yes, it works in Firefox (Firefox) 3.5 and in Safari (Safari) 4, but thanks to its JavaScript optimizations, it runs about 10 times faster in Chrome. To play, you only need to open this address in Google Chrome, and choose a ROM. I’ve tried out a couple of games and gotten an average FPS of around 50, compared to an unplayable 5 in Firefox. Besides helping you kill some time, this exercise is cool because it really makes you see that all those under the hood optimizations in the new Chrome aren’t just hype.
