As a professional blogger who talks about blogging, I get asked fairly often questions related to search engine optimization. Too often, it seems that these bloggers get too immersed into the inane tactics of SEO that they lose sight of the big picture. Search engine optimization is an important field. Thirty years ago, American film audiences pressed low in their seats as a massive white wedge of machine parts passed overhead. With the release of George Lucas’s Star Wars, the smooth, silvery flying saucers that had dominated postwar sci-fi became embarrassing reminders of an obsolete vision of the future.1 Lucas envisioned a World of Tomorrow dominated by black, white, and gray;2 hard-edged, massive, and inorganic forms, covered with a salty acne of apparatus. The film’s visual program was a departure from the saucers and occasional capsules writ large that sci-fi audiences had grown accustomed to, but its colorless symmetrical ships should have been recognizable to at least a small portion of its audience—those familiar with contemporary art.3

Nowadays, it seems like every celebrity under the sun has an action figure. Corey Feldman just got one, and Cary Elwes has one on the way, and if that isn’t a sign of the apocalypse, I don’t know what is. (Granted, it’s for the long overdue The Princess Bride, but still…Cary Elwes!) But what about the toys that unintentionally resemble celebrities? In its early years, the Star Wars line suffered from a lot of terrible likenesses, and while we couldn’t find any that looked like Cary Elwes (although there were too many who looked like Corey Feldman to count), we did find ten figures that were the spitting images of actors they were absolutely, positively not intended to resemble.

Deep within the source code of WordPress lies an endless list of useful functions just waiting for you to use them in your theme or plugin. New York—When it comes to garnering conversions, senior marketing executives view search engine optimization, pay-per-click (PPC) and e-mail tactics as the three most effective tools, according to a new study by Forbes Media. Respondents to Forbes’ survey rated ad networks and video ads as least effective. Among other study highlights, brand perception was considered most influenced by sponsorships and pay-per-impression programs in digital publications. Ad networks and PPC search were rated least effective. The low rating of ad networks in support of both conversion and brand perception is due to its primary role in demand fulfillment rather than demand creation, according to Forbes. The study, “Ad Effectiveness Survey,” polled marketers online in February and March on their attitudes toward digital marketing. It generated 112 responses.

The problem has boggled the minds of Web designers for years: fixed, fluid, elastic or a hybrid layout design? Each option has its benefits and disadvantages. But the final decision depends so much on usability that it is not one to be made lightly. So, with all the confusion, is there a right decision? By considering a few factors and properly setting up the final design, you can end up with a successful layout design that reaps all the benefits. This article discusses the pros and cons of each type of layout. Either one can be used to make a successful website layout, as long as you keep usability in mind.
