  • For 3 years you YouTubers have been ripping us off, taking tens of thousands of our videos and putting them on YouTube. Now the tables are turned. It's time for us to take matters into our own hands. We know who you are, we know where you live and we could come after you in ways too horrible to tell. But being the extraordinarily nice chaps we are, we've figured a better way to get our own back: We've launched our own Monty Python channel on YouTube. No more of those crap quality videos you've been posting. We're giving you the real thing – HQ videos delivered straight from our vault. What's more, we're taking our most viewed clips and uploading brand new HQ versions. And what's even more, we're letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there! But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our movies & TV shows and soften our pain and disgust at being ripped off all these years.

  • Web forms are one of the uglier elements on web pages. These pull-downs, text boxes, radio buttons and checkboxes are often blocky, awkward and out of place in the overall design of the page. There's a good reason; styling forms is challenging. The problem is complicated by the myriad of ways to mark up a form using HTML. Since the markup often changes from site to site, it's difficult to create a clean, reusable code base you can move from one website to the next. We figured out a way, of course. If we didn't you wouldn't be reading this right now. So read on. We're going to break down the elements of web forms and talk about how to handle them in your stylesheets.
  • The line between web and desktop applications is fading. Users now expect a richer experience. JavaScript can help provide interfaces and interactions that mimic the desktop. In this tutorial, I'll introduce you to the JavaScript-based Yahoo User Interface Library. We'll use it to convert normal HTML into more interactive controls. Best of all, Yahoo's library is open-source and has been released under a BSD license, so it's free for all users.
  • I have had many requests recently for a demonstration of using CSS for styling FORMS. Well here is a quick example based on form examples on the w3c website. Note that you can click on the text to activate the adjacent inputs, checkboxes and radios (thanks to Markus and Steve Williams for pointing out this omission). Forms are not very friendly when it comes to CSS and each browser has its own way of handling them. Styles that work in one browser will not work in another, so depending on which browser you are using you will see a slightly different interpretation.

  • The notion that Christianity is based on a “leap of faith” rather than an intellectual commitment of mind and soul to God is widespread in today’s culture. At The Skeptical Christian, this mistake is addressed head on. Christianity is *not* a worldview for the weak-minded and it is *not* based on a blind leap of faith. The Skeptical Christian was designed with discussion in mind. Any article on this site can be commented on, and any suggestions, critiques, or alternative perspectives on any of the writings are welcomed and encouraged.

  • Bottom line is there are two types of writers: those who believe in writer’s block and those who don’t. Neither will deny the magic and energy that possesses an author when inspiration rears its mysterious head, but where their approach to writing differs is how the time is spent between those moments of inspiration. Picture a blank page and what do you see? A canvas waiting to be filled with your words and your voice? Or a taunting emptiness that has you despairing over your first line? When you are daunted by the incessant cursor winking at you from the shoreless white sea on your computer, one of the biggest mistakes a writer can make is succumbing to doubt. Here are five practical tips that will snap you out of your daze and dissolve your writer’s block so that you can get back to the book you’re dying to write.

  • I don’t know about you, but often when I begin exploring new blogs to find useful information, I get so frustrated that I give up and leave within a few minutes of finding the blog. While many blogs might contain the useful posts I’m looking for, they often make it too difficult for new readers to find. Sure, if you’ve been following a blog for six months or more, you know the blogger, you know the basics of the blog, you know how useful and interesting the blog is. But if you’re new, you don’t know any of that. And first impressions mean everything when it comes to attracting — and more importantly, keeping — new readers. If a reader hates your blog at first site, you’ve lost him. If a reader can’t find anything good on your blog within a few minutes — actually, instantly for many readers — you’ve lost him. If you annoy a reader, you’ve probably lost him.
  • LOS ANGELES—The Recording Industry Association of America announced Tuesday that it will be taking legal action against anyone discovered telling friends, acquaintances, or associates about new songs, artists, or albums. "We are merely exercising our right to defend our intellectual properties from unauthorized peer-to-peer notification of the existence of copyrighted material," a press release signed by RIAA anti-piracy director Brad Buckles read. "We will aggressively prosecute those individuals who attempt to pirate our property by generating 'buzz' about any proprietary music, movies, or software, or enjoy same in the company of anyone other than themselves." RIAA attorneys said they were also looking into the legality of word-of-mouth "favorites-sharing" sites, such as coffee shops, universities, and living rooms.

  • Beautiful HTML is the foundation of a beautiful website. When I teach people about CSS, I always begin by telling them that good CSS can only exist with equally good HTML markup. A house is only as strong as its foundation, right? The advantages of clean, semantic HTML are many, yet so many websites suffer from poorly written markup. Let’s take a look at some poorly written HTML, discuss its problems, and then whip it into shape! Bear in mind, we are not passing any judgment on the content or design of this page, only the markup that builds it. If you are interested, take a peek at the bad code and the good code before we start so you can see the big picture. Now let’s start right at the top.
  • Webmasters often ask us at conferences or in the Webmaster Help Group, "What are some simple ways that I can improve my website's performance in Google?" There are lots of possible answers to this question, and a wealth of search engine optimization information on the web, so much that it can be intimidating for newer webmasters or those unfamiliar with the topic. We thought it'd be useful to create a compact guide that lists some best practices that teams within Google and external webmasters alike can follow that could improve their sites' crawlability and indexing. Our Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide covers around a dozen common areas that webmasters might consider optimizing. We felt that these areas (like improving title and description meta tags, URL structure, site navigation, content creation, anchor text, and more) would apply to webmasters of all experience levels and sites of all sizes and types.

  • Working with CSS can seem like a constant battle. While it's an incredibly powerful language, it can easily be used incorrectly, which will doom your development to a lifetime of imperfections.
  • Most bloggers love their RSS readers. Not only that, but they also love to gain new RSS readers. It is such a joy when you wake up one day and see that your Feedburner count jumped by 200 or 300, right? Those days are quite rare though, and most people seem to have a hard time gaining even a small number of new RSS subscribers consistently. Is there anything you can do about it? Any way to efficiently attract more RSS subscribers? Sure there is. Many people wrote about this topic in the past, but I wanted to give my take on the issue too. I wrote those 50 ideas as they were coming to my head, as briefly as possible. Enjoy.
  • It's official. We've signed adoption papers for the popular WordPress plugin that seamlessly redirects requests for an ordinary feed (from self-hosted WordPress blogs) to your super-powered FeedBurner feed. This plugin — a toddler in age, but a prodigy with HTTP requests — will be made available directly from FeedBurner as "FeedSmith." It was originally raised by the multi-talented Steve Smith, who's trusting us to ensure its continued well-being. If you aren't already familiar with this handy plugin, you should know it's a reliable way to track your entire feed-reading audience and can even result in that elusive "bump in subscribers" effect when you first activate it. What the plugin accomplishes, in Steve's own words:

  • St. Louis ska rockers the Urge are calling it quits after 14 years and three major-label records together. The group, whose most popular single, 1998's "Jump Right In," featured 311's Nick Hexum, will play its final shows together on December 21 and 22 at the Pageant in their hometown. Bassist Karl Grable called the breakup amicable and said the bandmembers will remain friends, adding that the decision has been a long time coming. "Everyone has a different idea of how they want things to turn out musically. And people change over time. Everyone grows, and everyone changes. It's not a bad thing." Singer Steve Ewing and Grable formed the Urge in 1987 and performed and recorded with a revolving door of guitarists, drummers and horn players. Their Receiving the Gift of Flavor (1995) caught the attention of Epic Records' Immortal imprint and was reissued by the label a year later. Master of Styles followed in 1998, and Too Much Stereo was released in 2000

  • Over the past few years, our company has had several clients who have needed a smaller shopping cart, usually to only sell a couple items. Because we expected sporadic traffic, we were tentative to go with a packaged shopping cart and merchant service. That just seemed like a lot of overhead. Thus, I have developed a few different ajax carts using paypal. I realized it would be nice to package this up, and create a lightweight, easy-to-use, flexible shopping cart. So we made simpleCart(js). The cart is a 10.5kb javascript file that uses cookies to keep track of the items in the cart. Thus, simpleCart(js) doesn’t require any databases or programming. You simply need to know some basic HTML and have the ability to copy and paste. However, it can easily be expanded to use databases or contain more advanced options.
