  • Account executive Darcy Knapp, of Network Solutions in New York, agrees: “Social networking sites are a terrific medium to reach new, existing and previously lost clients,” and they will become even more important as the Web becomes the primary source of information.
  • “IN RECENT years, consumers have become used to feasting on online freebies of all sorts: news, share quotes, music, e-mail and even speedy internet access. These days, however, dotcoms are not making news with yet more free offerings, but with lay-offs—and with announcements that they are to start charging for their services.” These words appeared in The Economist in April 2001, but they’re just as applicable today. During the dotcom boom, the idea got about that there could be such a thing as a free lunch, or at least free internet services. Firms sprang up to offer content and services online, in the hope that they would eventually be able to “monetise” the resulting millions of “eyeballs” by selling advertising. Things did not work out that way, though, and the result was the dotcom crash. Companies tried other business models, such as charging customers for access, but very few succeeded in getting people to pay up.

  • Three columns. One fixed-width sidebar for your navigation, another for, say, your Google Ads or your Flickr photos—and, as in a fancy truffle, a liquid center for the real substance. Its wide applicability in this golden age of blogging, along with its considerable difficulty, is what has earned the layout the title of Holy Grail. Many articles have been written about the grail, and several good templates exist. However, all the existing solutions involve sacrifices: proper source order, full-width footers, and lean markup are often compromised in the pursuit of this elusive layout.

  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a simple mechanism for adding style (e.g. fonts, colors, spacing) to Web documents. I prefer to use CSS, rather then JavaScript or Jquey, if the same functionality can achieved by CSS because it is most likely that some people might turn off JavaScript in their pages but not CSS. While some web designer might disagree because of CSS’s lack of ability to make the web pages more dynamic I still think CSS is the way to go.

  • 1. The Death Star was a moon-sized battle station built and controlled by the Galactic Empire in the Star Wars universe. 2. It housed a laser capable of incinerating an entire planet in an instant. 3. Realizing how undeniably badass it felt to threaten people with "planetary annihilation" the Empire decided to make The Death Star an integral part of their defense strategy. 4. When they decided to build a second, larger Death Star after the first was destroyed, it became clear that this strategy was somewhat inelastic:
  • INTERNET idealists like me have long had an easy answer for creative types — like the striking screenwriters in Hollywood — who feel threatened by the unremunerative nature of our new Eden: stop whining and figureout how to join the party! That’s the line I spouted when I was part of the birthing celebrations for the Web. I even wrote a manifesto titled “Piracy Is Your Friend.” But I was wrong. We were all wrong. Like so many in Silicon Valley in the 1990s, I thought the Web would increase business opportunities for writers and artists. Instead they have decreased. Most of the big names in the industry — Google, Facebook, MySpace and increasingly even Apple and Microsoft — are now in the business of assembling content from unpaid Internet users to sell advertising to other Internet users.
  • At a well-known five-star hotel, I asked if I could extend my checkout time by two hours. I was told no; the hotel was full. Unless I paid for a half day; then they'd accommodate me. Huh? If the hotel was full and needed my room, why would it make a difference if I paid them? And if they did have the ability to extend my checkout, why would they charge me? I spoke with the manager. Same answer. That was the last time I stayed at that hotel franchise. Contrast that to my recent experience at the Four Seasons in Dallas, TX, a hotel where I've stayed several times. When I arrived I didn't have to stand in line to check in; the valet simply handed me the key to my room. Which was set-up exactly as I like it: a yoga mat and an exercise schedule on the bed; a bowl of fruit on the table. And they automatically extended my check out time. I am a customer for life. How do they do it? What's their secret?
  • The expected drop in internet advertising revenues this year was neither unpredictable nor unpredicted, nor was it caused solely by the general recession and the decline in retail sales. Internet advertising will rapidly lose its value and its impact, for reasons that can easily be understood. Traditional advertising simply cannot be carried over to the internet, replacing full-page ads on the back of The New York Times or 30-second spots on the Super Bowl broadcast with pop-ups, banners, click-throughs on side bars. This might be a subject where considerable disagreement is possible, if indeed, pushed ads were still working in traditional media. Mostly they have failed. One newspaper after another is going out of business across the United States, and the ad revenues of traditional print media, even of highly respected magazines, is declining. The ultimate failure of broadcast media advertising is likewise becoming clear.
  • Ensuring that search engines can crawl and index your rich Internet applications (RIAs)—so that your content can be found by others—is of critical importance to building and maintaining an online presence. While Adobe and the leading search engines are making significant strides in making SWF content more searchable, you can take additional steps now to improve your search ranking positions further. The SEO Technology Center helps explain what the challenges are and provides practical steps, examples, and best practices that you can follow to overcome them.
  • W3C validation isn't very forgiving at times, but it allows you to see errors that are generated by your markup. Lots of errors and warnings thrown by the validator are a good indicator that your XHTML isn't in very good shape, and might not look consistent across different browsers. Here are 10 sneaky validation problems that trip developers up, and how to avoid them.
  • CSS 3 is on the horizon, and we're all getting excited. Thanks to the latest browser updates, developers can begin working with time-saving new properties – such as @font-face. Unfortunately, the availability of these features is limited to a tiny fraction of our overall userbase. At least for the next year or so, we'll need to continue utilizing the Flash and Javascript alternatives when embedding fonts. Luckily, a new contender, Cufón, has made the process unbelievably simple. What makes it different? Rather than Flash, it uses a mixture of canvas and VML to render the fonts. In just a few minutes, I'll demonstrate how to use any font you wish in your web applications. Excited?

  • I’ve worked with Flash for several years and have always been slightly dissatisfied with the markup needed to embed a movie in web pages. When I recently published a site in XHTML, my dissatisfaction with the markup grew as I realized that it simply wasn’t valid in this context and was bloating my pages to unacceptable levels. A leaner, standards-compliant method of embedding Flash movies was called for.

  • Whew! We've finally surfaced, gasping for oxygen, from the deluge of responses to our challenge to Create a sign for us to post around the new Woot building. What year is it now? Does my wife still remember me? Is Brooklyn still in the league? We should explain how we judged this one, because it's a little different. Instead of honoring the very best entries from the whole contest, first we picked the best one in each category that we needed signage for, and then ranked those best-in-category ones to arrive at our final four money-winners. So some of the HMs may actually be better than some of the money-winners, which has never, ever happened before. (No, we didn't really like any of the proximity-card entries, so no winner there.) Now, while we readjust to life outside the Contest 118 bubble, behold your new gods:

  • Old school best practices for writing brand marketing copy have included the omission of terms that may reflect poorly on a company, including the term "cheap" to describe a product or service. But is this practical in the world of SEO? In these seemingly dire economic times, search volume for phrases that include the term "cheap" has spiked. In an iMedia article published last May, Craig Macdonald at Covario cited comScore research (from December 2007) indicating the search phrase "cheap airfare" alone is worth about $8 million. According to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool, the average monthly search volume for the phrase "cheap insurance" typically amounts to 673,000 queries. Last month, the number of queries for this term rocketed to 2.7 million. Likewise, the average monthly search volume for the phrase "cheap car" is traditionally about 1 million queries. Last month, the volume exceeded 3.3 million.

  • In this article tripwire magazine provides a list of very useful CSS Techniques that you can use freely to make your website or blog more dynamic and inprove its Look & Feel. The article will also give you an introduction to CSS and why it should be used instead of table-based layouts. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can be applied to any kind of XML document. Cascading Style Sheets offer significant advantages compared to the other option available – table-layouts. First of all CSS provides us with a strict separation between layout, design of the page, and the information, presented on the page. This means that the layout of all pages in a website can be changed at one by editing style definitions in one .css-file that all the web pages refer to.

  • It all started with an eBay auction for a new G4 Powerbook. My friend Cory wanted me to sell it for him just days after he bought it. Probably because he realized that, aside from looking cool, he had no real use for it. For the sake of an easy sale, I just pretended to sell it as my own, with a starting price of $1700, and the "Buy It Now" option for $2100. You are bidding on my 19 day old G4 Powerbook. This was purchased for a project that fell through. When I tried to return it, I was informed of a 10 day limit for returns! Your new laptop comes with its original box, all of its documentation, all of its original accessories, and the blue tooth mouse. Days go by with no sign of interest, until I receive this email from an interested eBay member:
