  • EWAN MCGREGOR was left utterly dumbfounded when he turned up at the world's leading STAR WARS destination in a T-shirt bearing his name – and no one bothered him. The Scottish actor, who played Obi Wan-Kenobi in the three Star Wars prequels, feared he'd be mobbed when he visited a tourist attraction in Tunisia, where George Lucas filmed a pivotal scene in the first Star Wars movie, during his 2007 Long Way Down motorbike trek. But, even though he was wearing a T-shirt with his name on the back, sci-fi devotees refused to believe McGregor would just show up on a bike – and left him alone. He tells Best Life magazine, "We went to the location used in the original Star Wars, where we meet Luke Skywalker and he buys R2-D2 and C-3PO and does them up in the oil bath. It has been preserved as a tourist attraction. "Now, who goes to an out-of-the-way place like that but a hardcore Star Wars fan? Anyway, we (MCGregor and fellow Long Way Down adventurer Charley Boorman)

  • After a quote from Pixelux Entertainment (developer of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed) COO Vik Sohal that seemed to indicate that a PC version of Force Unleashed was on the way, Lucas Arts quickly tightened up the communication ranks and denied the rumor unequivocably. Unleashed 360/PS3 Producer, Cameron Suey, explained the decision saying, "someone with a $4,000 high-end system would definitely be able to play the Euphoria, the DMM and really technical elements of the game. But someone with a low-end PC would have a watered down experience, they would have to turn all the settings down and it wouldn't be the same game".

  • With each new release of Windows Internet Explorer, support for the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) standard has steadily improved. Internet Explorer 6 was the first fully CSS Level 1-compliant version of Internet Explorer. Windows Internet Explorer 8 is planned to be a fully CSS Level 2.1-compliant browser, and will support some features of CSS 3. If your Web site targets browsers that include earlier versions of Internet Explorer, you want to know the level of CSS compliance for those versions. This article provides an at-a-glance look at CSS compliance across recent versions of Internet Explorer, including support in Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 and planned support in the final version of Internet Explorer 8. This article's organization is loosely based on that of the CSS reference documentation on MSDN. It contains the following sections:

  • The folks at CERN have successfully tested the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). They are now ready to move forward on the tests for which the LHC was built. The LHC has had a great deal of press of late – some positive, some negative. We’ve posted about it several times here on Neatorama.com. The YouTube video above, apparently created by CERN employee Chris Mann, does a great job explaining what the LHC is all about. It followed hydrogen gas from a tank that is released into the system all the way to a collision between super-high-energy protons colliding at near light speed. If you’re remotely interested in the LHC, consider this a “must-see” video.
  • ChristianWebsite.com was founded in 1995 by Jeff White. Originally, the site was called Best of the Christian Web and was simply a list of the best Christian websites. At that time there were less than 200,000 websites in existence. Today there are well over 100,000,000 websites! As the site increased in popularity more features were added and the small listing of sites evolved into one of the largest Christian directories with over 80,000 websites.

  • Shaving is a low-tech form of card theft where thieves sort through sets of 16-digit numbers to find one that matches an existing card, and then verifying that number either by trying to make a purchase online or by phone. The scammers can also buy a list of valid credit card numbers from black market sites online. Once they have their hands on a valid account number, they then create a new card with those numbers by shaving the numbers off of gift cards or expired credit cards and gluing them onto a defunct or stolen card. The magnetic strip is gouged with a knife or pen so that a store clerk has to manually enter the account number on a keypad, and the charge goes through. If they're successful, months can pass before a cardholder discovers the fraud. After all, if your wallet hasn't been stolen and you haven't misplaced a card, you may be puzzled to discover that your card has been compromised even though it's safely tucked away the entire time.
  • For testosterone-driven sci-fi devotees in their 30s and early 40s, the universe changed about 15 minutes into 1983's Return of the Jedi. Until then, the Star Wars galaxy and, in most cases, our own lives, were blissful, asexual realms of brave adventures and weapon-wielding heroes threatened only by their assigned villains and (if we weren't careful) "cooties"/"girl germs." Sure, Han Solo smooched Princess Leia a little inside that giant slug, but that's what heroes are supposed to do when there are no Sith Lords handy to battle. Captain Kirk did the same thing with alien chicks to fight boredom when there were no Klingons to phaser. But it was nothing we wanted to do. Then, there was Jedi. Tattooine. Jabba the Hutt and his dark, foreboding palace. Lando in hiding. Chewbacca brought in as a prisoner by Princess Leia in disguise. She managed to free Han from the carbonite, but (of course) she was captured.

  • It's pretty common, when reading discussion of Apple's “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads, to come across the comment: Sure, they're great ads but they don't work. John Hodgeman’s PC is far more likeable than Justin Long’s smug hipster Mac. This is missing the point. To illustrate, here are director Chuck Jones’ rules for writing Road Runner cartoons, copied from Wikipedia: 1. Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going “beep, beep”. 2. No outside force can harm the Coyote—only his own ineptitude or the failure of Acme products. 3. The Coyote could stop anytime—if he was not a fanatic. (Repeat: “A fanatic is one who redoubles his effort when he has forgotten his aim.” —George Santayana). 4. No dialogue ever, except “beep, beep”.
  • At 7?6?, Yao Ming is one of the tallest Olympians, one of the most revered basketball players across the world, and we’re willing to bet, were there an Olympic competition for aerial photography, he’d score heads above the rest. Puns aside, getting a camera up into the air is no small (or short) feat. We’re not all tall like Yao Ming, and we don’t always have access to a kite or a plane… Plus, tripods and professional monopods are expensive and weigh about a gajillion pounds. So, we made our own Photojojo Sky-Cam, just for you and just in time for your own photography Olympics. • Perhaps you have wondered how predictable machines like computers can generate randomness. In reality, most random numbers used in computer programs are pseudo-random, which means they are a generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula. This is fine for many purposes, but it may not be random in the way you expect if you're used to dice rolls and lottery draws. RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. People use RANDOM.ORG for holding draws, lotteries and sweepstakes, to drive games and gambling sites, for scientific applications and for art and music. The service has been operating since 1998 and was built and is being operated by Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland.

  • The doctoring of photos, once considered the reserve of tyrants and UFO nuts, is becoming increasingly widespread. With photo-editing software becoming ever more sophisticated, and the internet allowing instant distribution, it has never been easier to create and spread hoax images. Below we present 20 of the most striking, interesting and controversial fake photos, most of them produced in the last five years. Some were created to amuse, some to mislead, while others were an attempt to rewrite history. And although the credulity of the internet has been blamed for allowing hoax photos to flourish, several of the fakes below were actually uncovered by bloggers after being distributed by mainstream media outlets.

Republican speakers have talked about reform and character far more frequently than the Democrats. And Republicans were more likely to talk about businesses and taxes, while Democrats were more likely to mention jobs or the economy.

  • If you run a consumer business, chances are pretty good a few of your customers are posting their opinions about it on the dozen or so Web sites that review local businesses across the country. These sites attract tens of thousands of daily posts and position themselves as online destinations for consumers to offer or get an unvarnished take on a business—to be both the critics and lobbyists. The largest of these sites, in terms of July monthly unique visitors, include YellowPages.com (T)(roughly 18 million uniques), YELP (roughly 17.8 million), Yahoo! Local (YHOO) (roughly 13.2 million), and Citysearch (roughly 10 million), according to Web analytics firm Compete.com. “These sites are going to become more important,” says Matt Booth of Kelsey Group, a research firm that specializes in local search. “And there are going to be an increasing number of them.”

  • Often in the development of a site I come across the need to display the size of a document next to the link targeting it. I also like to display the type of file the link targets, for example, when linking to pdfs, mp3s or Word documents. These indications distinguish the ‘attachment’ link from a normal web link, whilst also giving the user some inkling of the time they will need to wait to view the resulting content. So I was pretty excited when Simon bounded in from work and enthusiastically demonstrated json-head, a Google App Engine application he built on the train home. Every file on the web, be it a web page, a text file or whatever has HTTP headers associated with it. This is meta information about the file that is sent before the actual contents of the file itself. Included in this meta information is the size of the document. You can call json-head with JavaScript (JSONP).

  • Over the last months we have seen a strong trend towards more individual web designs. These designs use realistic motifs from our regular life, such as hand-drawn elements, script fonts, pins, paper clips, organic textures and scrapbooks. That’s not a big surprise as they manage to serve the function which faceless shiny glassy 3D-buttons completely fail to deliver: convey the individuality and personality. “Personal” designs appear more familiar and more friendly. Used properly, such elements can give a human touch to design and communicate the content in a truly distinctive manner. However, apart from visual design elements one can also get creative with the layout of the site – its structure and the way the information is presented and communicated. To provide you with some ideas of how exactly it can be done, we have been collecting examples of creative design layouts.
