  • TV reception is determined by the size and type of antenna and the direction in which it is pointed. To determine the right antenna, use the color coded Antenna Type to select the channels that you wish to view. Antenna types are color coded according to the size and type of antenna needed for reception. The list is arranged in order of ease of reception, with the stations requiring the smallest multidirectional antenna at the top, to those requiring the largest directional antennas at the bottom. Use the "Compass Orientation" listed below to point your antenna or rotor system for the channels you wish to receive. Please note that "Compass Orientation" is referenced to magnetic North. The "Frequency Assignment" column is provided to facilitate custom antenna design for special circumstances.

With the ability to drastically expand the browser's functions using plug-in extensions and Greasemonkey scripts, many of Firefox 3's built-in features are overlooked. Here are eight handy things you can do with Firefox, ranging from tiny tweaks to hugely powerful capabilities, all with nary an extension to install.
  • It's 11 a.m., and a handful of Flickr.com employees have gathered around a messy conference table to discuss, as they have daily for six years, the minutiae of governing humans. First order of business, the Brazilians. It seems a suspicious number of people in Sao Paulo have been using the popular photo-hosting site to post pictures of dishware. The idea is to sell the stuff — a clear violation of the company's no-commerce rule.

  • Over the years, WordPress has consistently proven to be the most popular blogging system out there. Millions upon millions of blogs run on WordPress, and that’s not counting those that are hosted on WordPress.com, Automattic’s free, hosted blogging service. But it’s not just a blogging platform; as many have discovered, it works really well as a fully-fledged content management system — it really comes down to how the theme is written, and often the plugins that are used. Let’s take a look at some of the oddest uses people have come up with for a mere blogging platform.
  • Last week I posted a collection of Photoshop brushes for creating your own textured graphics. • I gave a talk this morning at BarCamp London 5 about CSS Systems, a new term that I am using to define a top-down approach to architecting a site's CSS. A CSS System is a reusable set of content-oriented markup patterns and associated CSS created to express a site's individual design. It is the end result of a process that emphasizes up-front planning, loose coupling between CSS and markup, pre-empting browser bugs and overall robustness. It also incorporates a shared vocabulary for developers to communicate the intent of the code. The talk elaborates on this concept, and also describes a number of tricks I use to preempt maintainability issues. You can view just the slides on SlideShare, but as they might not make sense out of context you can download a PDF of the slides with notes for the complete experience.
  • Monster Commerce was acquired by Network Solutions nearly 3 years ago in December of 2005. As with most “big fish little fish” acquisitions, the little fish gets swallowed up. This situation is no different. Late last year Monster Commerce announced it was upgrading its native client base to the Shopping Cart system version 7. Version 7 is really a native Network Solutions shopping cart system and the Monster Commerce brand is not even visible there. Monster Commerce began the migrations this summer and I have to assume they haven’t gone as planned. Our two MC sites were slated for September and we even had dates that the sites were to ‘go live’. However, Monster Commerce abruptly pulled the plug on the remaining migrations until after the new year. We received the following notice to this effect, but with no new ETA date.
  • As I posted a few days ago, we have had several years of experience running a store powered by E-Commerce software from Monster Commerce (now Network Solutions). Network Solutions has decided to “upgrade” all of its customers (including ourselves) to a new version of the software (called Network Solutions Pro E-Commerce) which is fundamentally defectively designed to have less functionality/capacity than their earlier package while often exhibiting usability problems with negative impacts on productivity.

  • No shield, however thick, can protect you from their assault. No sword, however sharp, can prick the tentacles of their mind. The Illithid, or Mind Flayers, are the most feared citizens of the world under our feet. Their society is based on enslavement, cruelty and total submission by all other races. They do not harm your body they simply claim your mind and soul. Those taken by the Mind Flayer live a prisoner in their own bodies as they can only scream inside there conquered mind. Nothing stands before the Illithid and no heart, however valiant, will remain pure against the horror they bring.

  • Chinese researchers claim they've confirmed the theory behind an "impossible" space drive, and are proceeding to build a demonstration version. If they're right, this might transform the economics of satellites, open up new possibilities for space exploration –- and give the Chinese a decisive military advantage in space. To say that the "Emdrive" (short for "electromagnetic drive") concept is controversial would be an understatement. According to Roger Shawyer, the British scientist who developed the concept, the drive converts electrical energy into thrust via microwaves, without violating any laws of physics. Many researchers believe otherwise. An article about the Emdrive in New Scientist magazine drew a massive volley of criticism. Scientists not only argued that Shawyer's work was blatantly impossible, and that his reasoning was flawed. They also said the article should never have been published.

  • The question has been kicked around by the technology press for some time now: Why does Google keep products in beta for so long? Beats me, but I'm trying to find out today because the Web monitoring company Pingdom has taken the time to quantify the matter: Pingdom's count shows that almost half of Google's 49 products are in beta, including such established stalwarts as Gmail — released in April 2004 — and Google Docs. (Pingdom intentionally left Google Labs out of the mix.) "Everyone knows Google is fond of the beta label on its products, but we wanted some actual numbers so went through all of Google's products to see how many of them are in beta," Pingdom analyst Peter Alguacil tells me in an e-mail. "It turned out to be a whopping 45%. As far as we know, there is no other company that does this to the extent that Google does."

She was born by C-section at 28 weeks due to complications of pre-eclampsia. This is a blog that will keep us all updated on how she and her family are doing. When she was in the NICU the afternoon of her birth, the nurses put her right by the viewing window. There were at least 10 family and friends in the hall watching her. • After reading Dave Shea's article on CSS Sprites using jQuery to produce animation effects, I felt like playing around with things to see what could be done but accomplish it with a simpler HTML structure (no need for adding superfluous tags) and simpler code, too. Changing the position of the background image felt to be the best approach to creating the type of effect we're looking for (and I'm not the first to think so: see the examples at the end of this article). jQuery is a great library for this type of task but out of the box, it can't animate background position properly because of the need to animate two values instead of just one (too bad not all browsers implemented the non-standard background-position-x and -y like Internet Explorer). Grab the latest version (1.0.2 as of this writing) of the Background-Position plugin. Previous versions didn't support negative or decimal values properly.

For example, while we can see the fly on the wall, our eyes aren’t equipped to make out the fine details of the hairs on it’s face. This is where macro photography comes in. It gives us a glimpse into the world of the very small, which goes largely unnoticed by us as we hurriedly shuffle through our day.

The body, about eight times Jupiter’s mass, lies exceptionally far from its presumed parent star — roughly 11 times Neptune’s average distance from the sun. “If this object is a planet at such a wide separation it would challenge our conceptions of planet and companion formation,” says theorist Adam Burrows of Princeton University.
